Origins of the EGirl Style

The term “e-girl” emerged in the early 2010s and derives from “electronic girls” due their heavy online presence. The earliest examples of the style were found on Tumblr. Although it evolved out of previous subcultures such as emo and scene, e-girl also features influences from Japanese kawaii fashion to the goth aesthetic look.

In addition, the look draws inspiration from videogame and cartoon characters. Anime is also a huge influence —pleated skirts, chokers, and neon-colored hair are all staples of the e girl style. That colorful and playful vibe often blends with a darker edge, something that stems from similar Tumblr aesthetics like Pastel Goth and Pastel Grunge.

EGirls in Pop Culture

One of the best examples of an on-screen E-girl is Ramona Flowers, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead in the 2010 film Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.
The character rocked cyberpunk-inspired outfits, loved videogames and, in her own words, changed her hair “every week and a half.”

Another example is Harley Quinn, more specifically, in 2016's Suicide Squad. Her attire included fishnets and cute accessories. Regarding hair and makeup, Harley‘s signature pigtails and heavy eyeshadow definitely inspired the e-girl look we all know and love.

And what about offscreen e-girls? Doja Cat and Billie Eilish are two of the most notable examples.
However, the singers take on two very different approaches to the e-girl aesthetic: Doja relies on the more bubbly and feminine aspects of the style.

On the other hand, Billie channels the darker and androgynous side of it.

Now that we know how the e-girl style originated, we will see how to become an egirl with the following list:

1. Egirl Hair

Don't be afraid to experiment with pastel hair dye! E girls love to play with their look, and the best way to start is with your hair. It doesn't matter the result as long as it's dramatic.

2. Egirl Makeup

Makeup is one of the most defining characteristics of the e-girl look. First off, sharp winged eyeliner is a must. Pair it up with soft pastel shades and faux lashes. Another staple of this style is pink blush: apply it all over your cheeks and the tip of your nose to give an anime vibe. You can also add some highlighter, over-line your lips and finish the look with some face stamps under your eyes.

3. Neon Crop Tops

Crop tops are super versatile and allow you to accentuate your waist, giving a doll-like shape. While these items come in a wide variety of colors, neon is a favorite among the e-girl community. A great piece is our neon turtleneck crop top, which is currently available in our store. The crop top comes with buckle straps to help you nail that futuristic look, so make sure to check it out!

4. Cargo Pants

This late 90s/early 2000s icon is a go-to item for e girls. Cargo trousers are super comfy and add a bit of edge to the overall look.
Much like crop tops, this piece goes with virtually anything in your wardrobe, as it maintains its functionality while still being cute AF.

5. Beanies

Simple and cute, beanies are one of the ultimate accessories for any e girls out there. These cozy hats look incredible in almost everyone, plus they're super versatile and stylish —which is always a win-win. You can go for a reliable all-black hue or, if you're looking for something a bit over the top, some vibrant colors like pink or yellow will surely do the trick.
